A friend of mine asked if there was some sort of device out there to capture audio only from the output of a tv.

I had suggested him to use a notebook (audio in) and then use some software like audacity but he wants something compact and stand alone.

Is there such a device out there??

Maybe a digital voice recorder or whatever bootleggers are using instead of MiniDisc recorders these days? An old tape deck or not quite as old CD-R recorder deck?

I assume the TV has line level outputs.

how much audio is he capturing?
a digital recorder coupled with a rca-minjack cable should do it.

He wants to record a couple hours of audio at a time. Theres some sort of music channel that has a DJ remixing stuff that he likes. Its like one of those cable/satellite radio channels that our cable providers throw at us.

err, digital voice recorders can do that...some even have microsd card to expand capacity.

or just line-in to computer...it's not like it's high quality audio signal anyway.

in what format is the audio captured to? do some have the options to convert to mp3 on the fly?

If he can "DVR" the program and get it to his computer, he could strip the audio track from the file. Might be a little more work, but could maintain 5.1 if it is so broadcast.

I've already asked him about doing it that way and while he has a DVR he doesn't have a way to input the audio to his computer. I suggested using a notebook and apparently it does not have a audio in jack.

they record to mp3 or wma...

cool, I'll tell him. got a recommendation on a good one?
