"Device not accessible due to I/0 error" Say what??

That's the message I get when trying to use my HP 9900 CD/DVD drive on my Windows XP Pro machine. It worked at one time right after a reformat but was cantakerous before (sometimes it worked but not always).
It does show up in device manager as working properly. Also Nero finds it. I do have another burner on my machine that works just fine but I'd like to use the DVD feature. They are both on the same cable and the inaccessible one is the master. What am I overlooking? I did remove it in devcice manager and let it re-install to no avail.
TIA,
Jerry
