Device Manager shows a blank page

On an AMD system I built running Windows XP, some things have suddenly quit working. Specifically, the internal modem and USB scanner both quit working. Also, when using windows explorer, there is a long delay before you can look on the drives. There may be other problems also, but I must note that installed programs still do work. The device manager page is now completely blank. I physically removed the modem, and it did not help.

Does this sound like a software or hardware problem ? My hunch is that something on the motherboard has failed.

Comments appreciated.

Are you using a USB card? Mabey it is not installed properly. If it is USB and the Ethernet Port mabey those devices are dead. Did you install the I/O shield right so that the Static things are properly on it?

No USB card, the USB ports are on the motherboard.

This system has been working fine for months so I am confident in the installation of everything.

I can't get the screenshot right now, but it looks perfectly normal except that in the window area where the devices should be, nothing at all is shown.

why cant you get a screenshot just hit print screen than ctrl+v in ms paint save it to a jpg file and host it on imageshack.us

Could also be a virus, my suggestion is to try a windows repair install, and make sure you have an anti-virus program.

I've encountered two systems in the past week with the blank device manager window in normal & safe mode. A repair install did not fix the problem and both pc's had spyware.

First:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Plug and Play.

If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK.
3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK.
4. Close Services.
5. Restart the computer.
