I have win2k and a sblive. I had a little problem with ZoneAlarm and after I had uninstalled it my sound doesn't work! I can't play the basic sounds in the sound & multimedia part of the control panel. I have tried re-installing it, different PCI slots but to no avail. If I was to totally install it from scratch, which files do I need to remove from the \winnt\system32 folder?

Thanks

Q: When I try to play a song with Winamp, I get a MMSYSTEM error message that says "specified device ID out of range of system." What the hell is wrong THIS time?

You are getting this error message because your sound card is setup improperly. To fix it, try these steps, in the order I have them listed.

1. Go to Winamp's preferences menu, and double click on whatever plug-in you are using as your Output plug-in. At the very top of the window that comes up, there will be a line that reads "WaveOut Device:" With a box right next to it. In the box it will most likely say "WaveMapper (default, recommended)." Now, click on the box, and right below the WaveOut option, there should be a line that reads something like "0:(name of your soundcard) WaveOut [220]." Select this option, and see if it fixes the problem.

2. Access your computer's control panel, and double click on the system icon. Click the "Device Manager" tab, find your sound card in the list, and double click on its icon. Check to see if there are any IRQ/DMA conflicts between the sound card and another system device. If there are, follow the on screen instructions that Windows will give you on how to fix them. If you are an experienced user, you can try manually changing your sound card's IRQ, but DO NO attempt this unless you REALLY know what you are doing.

3. Reinstall your sound card. Just run the uninstall program, get rid of all the drivers, and then run the install program again.

4. If none of the above work, it is either time for a new sound card, or a new system.

I checked out those options and it still doesn't work. I would play mp3's using directSound output, but I sometimes get errors saying the directsound object could not be made.

Anyone know what this specific error means?
