Device "advanced power management" problem (Win98)

I'll apologize for the remedial question but my search was empty as was repeated attempts to contact Microsoft and (ick) Compaq.

Under Device Manager for Win98 SE, the "Advanced Power Management Support" device has a yellow exclamation point next to it. The computer will sporatically freeze or reboot
during application use or sometimes even while idle. I imagine this issue relates to the faulty device driver.

My question is... how can I get it back functional?

Since it is a friend's computer, I wanted to contact a technician so I didn't do something irreperably silly. Can I just remove it and restart, hoping it will readd it correctly? Also, since he doesn't have his disk, is there anywhere on Microsoft's webpage that has the power manager drivers?

You need to furnish more details:
1. What Mobo? (most older BIOS don't support APM)
2. What CPU?
3. etc.
 
I checked Compaq's webpage, and they aren't too specific about the motherboard model.

It's a 5000 series motherboard??, with a Pentium II 300mhz processor..
64MB SDRAM

I figured it would be operating system related (software) rather than hardware. Anyone have any experience with correcting this possibly corrupt driver?

And how do drivers become corrupt? *boggles*

Ok.
Go to the device manager. Find the Advanced power managment support icon and double click on it. When you'v got the apm properties box open, click on the settings tab. There should be 2 checkboxes. Place a tick in both and restart.

That should correct the problem, if it doesn't, find a win98 cd and crawl in there and find the following files:

vpowerd.vxd
power.drv

Then just copy and paste them into your Windows\System\ directory. That will replace the apm drivers just incase they are corrupt.

Drivers can become corrupt many ways. A program could write over it, you hdd could have a bad sector where the drivers are stored. Basically any number of things.
