Flight Diverted After 'Troubling' Note Found
NEW YORK -- A United Airlines flight from London to New York was diverted to Ireland on Thursday after a crew member found a "troubling" note in a seatback pocket, airline officials said.
The plane landed safely at Shannon Airport in southwestern Ireland and the passengers and crew were taken off the plane while it was searched, according to United spokeswoman Chris Nardella.
The plane was still in the process of being searched shortly after 12:30 p.m., Nardella said.
The Boeing 777 took off from London's Heathrow airport with 180 passengers and 16 crew members, but after takeoff, "one of our crew members found a note in a seatback pocket that was troubling," Nardella said.
Nardella said she could not release any details of what the note said, but because "safety and security is our number one priority," the decision was made to divert the plane.
The plane had been scheduled to land at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10:10 p.m. EST. The passengers will be kept at Shannon until the airline decides whether it is appropriate to fly the plane on to the United States or arranges an alternate mean of travel, Nardella said.
