Developing insomnia at age 17?

Just over the past couple of weeks, I've sometimes been unable to get to sleep at night for most the night, and sometimes getting up after only a couple of hours, and not being able to sleep the rest of the night. Over the past few weeks I've probably averaged 4-6 hours per night (sometimes as little as 2, but some good nights of 8) compared to about 8-9 hours the rest of my life. Whadda think, I thought it was something you had all your life, but now I'm thinking otherwise. Is it chronic? Will I enjoy a nice sound sleep again?

I'm sorry, but all you have to look forward to is a lifetime of sleepless nights. :( Poor bastard... :)

I go through rounds of insomnia. Like every few months I suffer through a few weeks of very little or no sleep. I'm tired, but I just can't sleep. Sucks.

First of all, look at your environment. Has anything changed, diet, stress, schedule, etc. If none of those could be affecting you sleep, try setting a new schedule where you go to sleep at the same time every night. Improve your diet and get some exercise. You may also want to see a doc.

i've had that for the past few months. i'll sleep for maybe 20 minutes then be wide awake and not be able to go back to sleep even though i'm so tired i feel like i'm going to collapse. i think most of it is stress and not being able to stop thinking at night. i'm hoping that this summer will change that, but i don't know for sure. good luck :)

<< How much exercise do you get? >>

It started at a time where I got as much excersize as I've in 9 months. Baseball just started up yesterday, and I have swimming every other school day, so I don't think that is the problem.

It started on vacation to be exact, I slept on a couch for a few days, I figured it would go away when I hit my own bed, but nothing changed. Diets been consistent. I've always slept from about 10:30-6:45 with very little deviation, but its hard to be more consistent when nothing happens when you go to bed. I think I'll wait it out a little while longer before checking it out with a doc.
I'm not really stressed either, I'm actually one of the most happy-go-lucky guys you'll ever meet. I'm always in a good mood it seems. Always have a cool temper. Mid-terms were a bit stressful but that was months ago, and I've been cool since.
Thanks a lot guys for the help, keep 'em coming.

Doode, when I was 12 I didn't go to bed until 3:00. Then at 14-15 it was usually about 4:00+. Course, I was homeschooled so i didn't have to get up early. Now I get up around noon, acause getting up in the middle of the night (See: 9:00 AM) is jus TOO MUCH TO ASK!!

Let alone 6:00! BAH!

This started when I got addicted to computers. I can now be happy with 5 hours of sleep. :)

Have you tried eating before bedtime. Sometimes a full tummy will make you sleepy, but don't get overly full or your body will have to work harder digesting and the sleep won't be as restful.

do not.. do NOT eat and fill your tummy b4 going to bed:p Your muscles relax and stretch during the night..giving you a pot belly:) That and you'll get fat too.

Maybe a nice helping of sexual activity will do the trick. With or without someone else is up to you! ;)

I've been addicted for a few months now, and has only accelerated recently.
OH YEAH I JUST REMEMBERED! I bought a MCSE 2000 book at the airport, and I've been studying that since just before everything started. Not to mention my 1,000 page Linux book, and I printed out the first 29 pages of Tom's Hardware GF3 reveiw (havn't had time to copy and paste the last 1/3). Hmmm... it does seem to be a problem for computer geeks in particular. Any clinical link found between insomnia and computers? I wonder...

lol!

Melatonin is a (herbal?) pill. It's something your body makes naturally I believe. Anyway, there really isn't anything on this planet that's much more frustrating than not being able to sleep. I almosted wanted to put a damn gun to my head some nights.

try it...I got a coupke bottle at GNC.

If I didn't have to wake up, I could easily sleep 18 hours. But for the last couple of nights I've been sleeping only 4-5 hours a nite to slap together a program for my CS class.

I had some bad insomina during high school but i don't suffer from it any more now that i am in college. I guess it's cuz of less stress. I was always worried about getting into college in high school and now that i am in college, it's a little better.

Excercise definately helps and just don't make sleep such a big deal and you should be fine.

I used to use Melatonin to switch off after gorging on caffeine when working odd shifts. Good stuff. My wife was prescribed Ambien for insomnia, and it appears to kick ass. I have not sampled it since my urine is Government inspected. :)
