Deus Ex: Invisible War performance is disgusting

Has anyone found a Catalyst version that gives reasonable playability with this game? I had the 4.8 betas but went back to 4.2 as they have always given me the best performance, but even with them IW runs horribly.

DX 9c
XP Pro
Mobile 2400+ @ 2400
NF7-S v2
1 gig Level 1 Mushkin
9800pro @ XT

Thanks.

Sounds like you haven't updated Deus Ex: IW to it's latest version(1.2?). Upon release the game ran horribly until they patched it.

You might wanna go over here Eidos Forums and look for tweaks. Back when it first came out, there were lots of complaints. People were posting all kinds of tweaks, and adding texture mods etc. Maybe you can find something to help. I just got my copy od DX2 this week. I'll be heading over there after I finish Far Cry and load up DX2

I have almost the exact same system (except my Athlon XP is only clocked at 2.2GHz), and Deus Ex IW runs silky smooth. At least, in the first few levels it does (thats as far as i've played). Make sure you run it using Catalyst 4.4 or previous drivers, as the newer ones screw up the shadows in the game and cause them to flash and disappear randomly. ATI still has not fixed this problem. But performance should be great, even at 1280x1024!

i don't have any problems with it at 10x7 details hi and minimal AA/AF; it both plays and looks nice.

granted it is a resource hog - i can play Thief III at 10x8 with more AA/AF - with similar or better FPS to DEii - but DeuSex II is still quite playable at 10x7 . . . just leave off AA/AF if necessary. ;)

and i am using Cats 4.6 (Radeon 9800XT/ P4 @ 3.31Ghz/ 1GP PC3500)

edit: i am still using DX9b

Do you have shadows on?

I had them on low until I re-read the patch info and found you could turn them off completely. With them off it runs great, I mean I gained at least 30FPS from just that. It would be nice to have shadows, but not at that performance cost. Sad too since it uses the same engine as Splinter Cell, and its shadows look better and runs better with them on than IW.

yes . . . without shadows it really loses something imo. ALL details are "on" and 'hi'

just w/minimal AA and AF (i think 2x + 4x)

edit: fps w/shadows isn't ""great'; but the slowdowns are minimal (i am guessing to ~30) and although 'noticeable' don't detract from gameplay . . .

that said, DEii is on a backburner - after diii and Thiefiii

BTW, try Thief III; it runs well, looks great and is a WORTHY sequel. ;)
(best "atmosphere" in a game in a long time - a new meaning to "creepy")

I have Thief 3 but I was putting off playing it until the AI issues were fixed. I think I'll grab the patch and give it another shot.

I also thing I've fixed my IW problems. I used a third party program, IWTweak, to change the API to OpenGL for kicks, but it actually runs and looks about 10 times better than D3D.. on a Radeon. With bloom enabled (also looks much better in OpenGL) it gives the world a blurry, foggy look with trails which makes the sci-fi setting all the better.

Thanks for all the help.

is there a patch out for thief III yet? :Q

it runs great out of the box . . . and the AI 'failures' are in your favor . . . just try different difficulty settings to get the challenge you require. ;)

i am really curious about your tweak program . . . care to link to it? i have a 9800XT

Yep, I was surprised at how fast it was released. I've never seen a developer move so fast.

Here's a link to the tweak program: http://www.deusexzone.info/downloads.php?file_id=454

Forgot to mention I'm also using the beta 4.9 Catalysts. They seem to help as well.
Thanks!

maybe i better NOT install it . . . i am almost finished ;)
(does the tweak program affect anything OTHER than visuals?)

:Q

This is a game i could play AGAIN - on a harde-r/st setting!

and i don't EVER try beta (anymore) . . . even though they are probably just waiting for certification . . . ;)

I'll have to try this out. I made a "DX:IW Sucks Ass" thread awhile back, and suddenly I'm noticing there's a whole lot of them springing up. :p

DE2 does run quite slowly but remember it does have the same per-pixel lighting and shadowing that Doom III has. Turn off shadows and your performance will get better.

I anxiously awaited it after playing the first one, which was, in my opinion, one of the greatest games of all time. So I pick it up the day it comes out, at Best Buy, and rush home to find it... GASP, unplayable, on my top of the line, bleeding edge system. There were soooo many pissed off people in the forums, saying to edit this, modify that, get NDA drivers. I tried the different drivers, then decided it was silly to go through that much trouble to play a game.

So about 6 hours after buying the game, I put it on ebay. It was a poor Xbox port, that was the problem. Still, you'd think they would have remembered who made the first Deus Ex famous (PC gamers.) Ah well, fvck it.
