Deus Ex 9.99 (apparently demo version, so lousy deal)

However deus ex at least says it is a "special edition". Anyone know what this means? Anyway it is an endcap in my local target. There is a large assortment of games but most are the the things you would see anywhere for that price.

Deus Ex is a GREAT game (FPS/Adventure/Role Playing). For 9.99 you should pick it up asap.

Not so good of a deal on Deus Ex, it's a Demo version for $9.99. Better off going to your local Walmart and getting it for $20 (may be regional). :D

For 9.99 this might be the demo...most places have Deux Ex for near full price. Can someone confirm this is the full version before I drive 20+ minutes for this bad boy.

I know there is a GOTY edition coming out but, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think it's out yet and I would think it would say 'Game of the Year' edition instead of 'Special Edition'.

most places are actually selling deux ex for 19.99$ babbages, software etc. so it's possible it's the full version.

I just called my local Target in FL and they had MI4 for $39.99 :(

They were out of Deus Ex, which is a great game, BTW, especially for $9.99

The $9.99 jewel case Deus Ex at Target is a "Special Limited Edition", which means "Demo". I made the mistake of buying it, as there was nothing on the case that indicated that is was a demo.

Target would not refund the purchase price, due to copyright laws for opened software, even though it is impossible to tell that this is a demo until after you start the install program.

I have talked to Activision and Eidos about the packaging, and they all wanted to pass the buck to each other, although the Eidos guy did promise to 'talk to his supervisor', but I'm not holding my breath.

I picked up the full boxed version at WalMart for $20 instead.

AMDFan: Just so I'm clear, you bought DeusEx at Target, and the case made no mention of it being the demo rather than the full version, yet you only got the demo version?

You're right. The package says 'Special Limited Edition', but you get a 'preview version' when you install. The guy at Eidos admitted that it was not a complete version of Deus Ex, and said that most jewel case games that are full versions say 'Full Version' on the box. I don't buy that for a second. There is nothing on the packaging to suggest that it is not the full version, so I expected it to be the full version.
The distributor is Activision Value, and their web site shows this game as "Deus Ex - Limited Version", very different connotation than "Special Limited Edition".
To be fair, the guy at Eidos agreed that the packaging was confusing, but Eidos did not create the packaging for this version.

but eidos steadily jank people, i wouldn't buy any more eidos if they were the last company on earth, after they way they released tr4 on that 80-min cd that won't play on either of my computers
that's messed up about target not giving you your money back, maybe threaten litigation--as this is clearly a bait-and-switch. at least complain on the website so they know that this is an issue that needs to be addressed SOON
good luck
edit: yes, they are the worst

Right on, unclebud. Eidos is a crap company and the reason Looking Glass went out of business. They were suppose to buy Looking Glass, then decided that if back out at the last second and let LG go banckrupt, they could still have the rights to publish the Thief series for free. It might make business sense, but it was still a sh!tty thing to do.

Asgard: I'd edit your topic to show that this really isn't much of a deal since it's the demo. Otherwise a bunch of people might go buy it thinking it was the full.

Hopefully you all have Voodoo5's. It really needs glide *AND* 32 bit color to look good. It looked phenomenal on my Geforce2 after I downloaded the Loki openGl patch, but some reocurring error (lockup 10 seconds after loading a particular savegame) kept me from finishing the game. Major bummer.

Wish i would have seen this earlier. I could have told you about the "Special Edition" before anyone bought it. I used to work for Mattel so I knew that the SE versions are only like the first few levels of the game. Just enough to get you to try it and like it or hate it, the only problem is that they come out with these after the price drops on the retail so far that it isin't worth it to but it. On another note, I just finished the game today. Depending on how you react during the game, the ending changes, really cool. Anyways, mine is the full version that came out with the SB Live Platium 5.1 sound card. Anyone interested shoot me an email.

I thought Glide is 16-bit only to maintain compatibility with pre-Voodoo4/5 cards?

I would have to Agree with Ranger X, it is highly addictive for a FPS game, also there is a multiplayer patch available from Gamepowerfor those that do have it.

Yeah, it's a great game. Got it a couple of months ago when Bestbuy had it as a door buster for $9.99. Can't wait for Deus Ex 2 or Thief 3! ( they're in the works ).

I saw it last night at Costco B&M for $9.99. Didn't appear to be a demo or "special edition". Didn't pick it up...maybe I should.
