Deus Ex 2 won't run on my system, any ideas?

I'm trying to replay Deus Ex 2 now that I have a much more powerful system then the last time I played it, but I am having trouble running it. The game installs, patches, and loads just fine, but when it gets to the main menu, where the "New game, continue game, options etc etc" bar swings down, it freezes right there. The system doesn't lock or anything, but the game is frozen.

System:

Opteron 170
x1950 pro
2 gigs RAM

Now, it runs just fine with a P4 / 7600 GT system I have access too. Anyone know why it won't run on the x1950 pro (I'm assuming that's the problem...)

It might be a dual core thing. I remember that game having some issues with it. If that's the case, setting the affinity to one processor should fix it.

Perfect. Had to use the imagecfg utility which I'd never heard of before, and I will now have to memorize the command line imagecfg -a 0x1 game.exe, as I am sure I will have to use it again in the future. Thank you very much for your help.

Weird you had to run with one core,I have just finished playing Deus Ex 2 in Vista x64 (3800+ X2 CPU) and that runs great(just installed the game and play).

I finally played it this past summer (after buying it on Fs/Ft for like $5) & it ran fine on my AMD X2 system as well.

Where do you stand on the 1 vs 2 debate? Ever since 3 was announced, all I hear is everyone trashing 2. I believe those people never played the game. I would say half of the people who say they played it call it the worst game they've ever played. That is nonesense to me. It's coo' if you don't think it is as good as the first one (I think it's close), but to say its bad even is a stretch. It's a fun game. Had a few technical problems at the begining, but after 1.2 patch and with modern hardware, and the texture pack, its very fun still.

I would agree. I still really enjoyed DX2 well more than many other games I've played. People just trash talk it because it's not exactly what they wanted after 1. IW had a lame inventory system, it wasn't as deep, and there were some other things but overall I think it was still a good game. The technical issues were AWFUL, though, and since it was such a bad port I think this put the vast majority of PC gamers off. I had an FX5600 (nothing hot even for it's time, I realize) at the time and the game was barely playable at a decent framerate and I recall how angry I was. I essentially shelved it until I got a 6800 to play it. When I did play it, I loved it though.

It's divine intervention. There's a reason the big guy isn't letting you play it... just back away slowly and never think about it again.

Yeah, I don't think IW was bad at all. Many people who played the first DX tend to just compare it to that game, and it falls way short there, but on its own merits it's still among the top 20% of the FPSs I have played. The game has tons of bugs and bad design decisions, but despite that it still manages to be quite good overall.

I have to agree. As I have said before I got DX IW for $2.99 at gogamer and still felt ripped off. I couldnt even finish it and thats saying a lot because I have slogged through some crappy games in my day. Too each their own I guess.

I sloved that problem ages ago : )

Install the 1.2 patch

1. Start the game
2. Alt + Control + delete
3. Task manager > processes
4. Lookup Deus ex 2 process
5. Then set Affinty of processes to core 1 ( not core 0)

This all has to be done before the game loads to game's main menu.

Runs ok on my box... (opty 185), I didn't have to fiddle with anything outside of the game.

Do you guys who think it's aweful REALLY hate it because the game is bad in your opinion, or because the game has the name Deus Ex and didn't live up to your expectations?

DE2 has a "consoleish" interface and I hate it. The interface of DE1 was near perfect. Why change a good thing? Sure they could have tweaked it and updated the graphics for the obviously better looking DE2, but noooooo.

Anyway, that is my main beef with the game.

I thought it was just plain bad. Too slow and boring for me.

That's the trend though, now, isn't it? And no, that is definately not a good thing. Just look at Oblivion's interface. There is no reason you can't set hotkeys to anything you want, except that it's a console game too. Lame. Still, I love Oblivion. I can look past those kinds of things. That's what the mod community is for hehe.
