Detroit needs to forget about Barry Sanders...

I see there are quite a few Detroit sports fans in this forum. Don't you think Barry has given the city of Detroit and the Lions the finger for long enough? His book seems to have no credibility, and if Detroit didnt laugh him out of the city before, they surely will now.

Good ridance Barry... Billy Simms is Detroits favorite #20, and probably always will be...

While I agree with his sentiments regarding the Lions not caring about fielding a winning team, it doesn't give him the right to turn his back on them and retire just before training camp.

He really put them in a crappy situation by doing what he did when he did. And I am glad that the Lions won't trade his rights. He was a great back, but it really frustrated me how he went about retiring.

How's the Lions running game, these days?

You think Joey Harrington wouldn't want him in the backfield?

Enjoy James Stewart..I mean...Olandis Gary... I mean...Shawn Bryson.... oh well...LOL

Barry is a loser. I'm glad Detroit stood by their principles and told him see ya. The man was under contract. Too bad he felt like crying for a couple season rather than actually playing.

I imagine he was tired of scrambling for his life every Sunday. Had the lions actually spent money on some good offensive linemen and a decent defense so they were going to the post season regularly, he would not have retired until he shattered Sweetness's record

He got tired of carrying the team day in day out when management would not help make it into a winning successful franchise.

Yup, Barry didn't want to play for a bunch of LOSERS like the Lions. Funny, even today they're still big LOSERS, nothing has changed. Such a shame that such a sht franchise robbed us of seeing Barry finish out his career in another uniform.

Barry is top 3 greatest running backs ever (I've never seen Jim Brown play, but heard he was nasty, and I would rank sweetness #3), just in sheer quickness, strength, and breakaway speed alone. He was squatting over 1000lbs out of college(he was only 5-6, maybe 5-7), and could stop on a dime and reverse direction. I don't think we'll ever see such a freak of nature again...

I don't know much about his book, but I it always seemed to me that his team was so bad that he had to be superhuman to just have a good game. The franchise should take responsibility for sucking so bad you made your best player want to call it quits. As SP33Demon said, imagine what Barry Sanders could have done on a good team. It's really a shame.

The Lions teams of the 90's were NOT the problem. They fielded better then average talent, and had one of the best receiving units of the 90's. The big problem was QB. They never had one. With the exception of Scott Mitchell's 96' season, they didnt have a big time signal caller.

 Good call.

It was a sad day for football when he retired.

What about the O line? If Barry had an O line like say Dallas, think about the possibilities... 3000yd season anyone?

you have to blame barry for that JUST as much as you do Detroit.

Barry wimped out. OJ didn't wimp out on Buffalo, Sweetness didn't wimp out on the bears.

Lots of great running backs had great careers for bad teams.

At least Walter got to play on a Super Bowl team, Barry got stuck with a crappy team that didn't care about winning.

ya but that's ONLY in retrospect. sweetness retired what 2 or 3 years after the superbowl? IF sweetness had had barrys frame of mind, he would have retired LONG before the super bowl.

RedSox really can't blame the babe, their owner SOLD his rights, the Barry just walked out on them.

i'd say not exactly the same.

barry sanders could probably come back to the league today and still be better than 3/4th of the RBs around.
there are some exceptions, but not many.

Lions = teh suck!
Barry is great!
Detroit needs a new superstar on their team... hmm David Kircus is looking pretty good, they should play him more often, hehe. (btw, Kircus led Grand valley state to div 2 championship, same place I go to. Looking to repeat this year :))

Different but I think the Lions will be haunted by the ghost of BS for generations to come in the same way the ghost of the Babe haunts the sox.

The lions and their fans will forever wallow in the afterthought of whether or not they should have done anything different with him, as they fight, scratch and claw to improve to 6-10 every season for the next 100 years. :p
