The New York Times piece and an accompanying video portray a not-so-flattering image of Detroit as a murder-strewn hotbed of joblessness and decay, an image a spokesman for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said is not reality.

Body collector Thomas FTW

He remembers too many of the bodies. Like baby Isaiah Lewis, whose mother gave him to a stranger at a bus stop. That stranger killed the baby and shoved his tiny body under a mattress.

"That was the first time I cried at a scene," Thomas said.

He also remembers the friends and neighbors whose bodies he has picked up, like the little guy who lived two doors away from him who was shot and killed in a strip club.

?My theory?? Mr. Thomas offered. ?White people kill themselves. Black people kill each other. Chinese people don?t die.?

That explains a lot!

Was it Roger and Me that chronicled the downfall of these cities or am I thinking of another movie?

Roger and Me focused on Flint, which has never recovered.

OH my gosh. :(

and, of course that is what a spokesperson for Kwamie said...
The most recent and interesting tid-bit about Kwamie is that it cost the city of Detroit $200,000 to fix his pool!!!

I went to school there. My freshman year they found a body in the Flint river not more than 1/4 mile from my dorm.

Third and Chevy isn't the nicest neighborhood in Flint.

I'm glad I moved from Michigan. The job market was bad when I moved and it's even worse 2 and 1/2 years later.

I have been seeing commercials on TV with Michigan resident and actor Jeff Danials. The commercial is about making businesses aware that Michigan is a great place for their business. Good luck, but a television commercial isn't going to work without government support to back it up.

I'll watch the collapse of the state from across the border.

The commercial is goverment paid for. You know what I am saying then about the Ohio river front then. Detroit has a beautiful rivefront but needs to clean it up and develope it.

I left that city (Royal Oak suburb actually) in the 80's and never looked back. As far as I'm concerned they should have burned the whole thing down during the riots. Give it back to the deer, squirrels and robins.

I miss Michigan.

I lived there from the ages of 4 to 20, and grew up in Rochester Hills.

I think that it's a nice place to raise a family (the RH area).

If you have a chance, pick up the book called "Jobs." You'll recognize it from the yellow jacket. It's a collection of essays from people about their jobs. One of them is a cleanup man (comes after murders, suicides) and it's a really good read. Probably 500 words (just that one article).

That was a darn cool story. Sadly, it's the same story in many American cities these days.

The part where his friends robbed the beer truck then came to hang out...to them, this is the normal way of life. Stealing is normal. Fighting is normal. Drugs are normal. Getting shot is normal.

The problem w/America these days is that we have to stop the media from portraying that this is normal. When ShooBeeDee BigMoneyYo rapper releases his latest "song" sanctifying this type of behavior, it should be panned and decried by the media, not praised.

It's all because of gangsta rap music. Period. Eminem is from Detroit. Nuff said. :p
