Determining CPU state: Alive or Dead

I recently brushed on this topic in another thread but the question was focused on the motherboard. I concluded that the X5650 I had just received was dead. Currently I'm not so sure.

Can a CPU be dead and the platform still boot up the devices e.g. Case fans, GPU fan, etc.. can't really tell if the SSD booted but while all those things spun up and got juice the board didn't go into bios.. I watched the motherboard for codes to post through the boot up and nothing lit up.. After that I put my L5639 back in and it booted up fine. I'm waiting to hear back from the eBay vendor about my return product email. Could this X5650 be dead? I don't think I've ever come across something like this. It makes sense the chip is dead because the board could get the juice it needs for things to spin up that are not necessarily dependent on the CPU.. :hmm:

If everything is identical except the cpu's and one works and the other doesn't it is the cpu that is bad in 99.9% of the cases. The only other thing I could thing of would be bios support but in most cases that I have seen it will say something along the lines of unsupported processor detected and since they are both westmere-ep chips I would say that is highly unlikely.

The best way to troubleshoot this kind of thing, is to remove every component from the motherboard, except the CPU, heatsink, PSU, power switch and case speaker if your motherboard has it.

If you get a beeping code signifying missing memory, then the CPU is alive. If you get nothing but silence, then it's dead. That happened to me once when I bought a CPU from eBay that was D.O.A..

Also like nurturehate says, make sure your BIOS supports your CPU.

Sounds dead to me. About a month ago my main computer I'd had mining both on CPU/GPU was shut down in the morning. Tried to boot it and got the 00 code. Tried with a single video card, 1 stick of RAM, clearing CMOS, different PSU.. same issue with all. The system would boot and fans would spin, but just error code 00 instantly and nothing.

I assumed it was the mobo because CPUs die infrequently and this one wasn't getting -that- much voltage, just 1.38v. Not wanting the hassle of finding out it was the CPU rather than the mobo I just RMAed the CPU with the intel protection plan coverage and the mobo as well. Once I got the new CPU and mobo I tested the old CPU in the new mobo and same deal with no post and error code 00. Dead CPU.

$35 well spent on the Intel OC warranty

A motherboard can't boot without a working CPU, but it can partially start without one, including running the heatsink fan.

Is it possible the BIOS is not compatible with the X5660? Some motherboards will give no video or beeps if that is the case.

I swapped in a faster processor in my old Pentium D PC... and got something very similar. The FSB speed was too fast... but it acted like a bad CPU.

The only thing that would not make it work is a difference between CPUs but both being Westmere EP chips it's highly unlikely. The latest bios supports these Xeons. The first time I dropped it in I didn't reset the bios.. which shouldn't of mattered. After I re-tried the L5639, I pulled out the cmos battery and then tried the X5650 again and no go/same thing..

It's DOA. Send it back.. Get refund, buy a cheaper one 🙂

I bought it from esisoinc. I sent an email Friday. Haven't heard back from them. They have till later today to reply before I begin to think about giving them a negative review.

I'm probably going to go with an X5660

Look at what ESISOINC has their X5660 listed on eBay for, and then look at what they ESISOINC quoted me in my eBay message response when I asked what they'd sell me an X5660 for. MIND YOU this is in the same messages that was started from the request to return their DEAD CPU they sent me (the X5650):

I had 2 E5570's ES's that would not even post on a server motherboard. (they looked fine) Got 2 real ones, and they worked fine.

BIOS is a definite possibility.

If you need one lok here, buy it now $225

I made sure I had the latest bios before buying this L5639 Westmere I have running in my system now so the X5650 should of worked.

Right after I got my RMA for the X5650, I bought a 5660 from a different vendor in Minnesota. 'ItSupplyTrain' for 235$ I feel much better dealing with someone else other than esisoinc.. frankly they F**k'n suck, period. I just hope there is a way I can block then from accidently buying from them in the future.

Thanks for the link, though 🙂
