Question Detecting what program is sending sound

One frustration is that it's hard to tell what program is causing sound. For example, sitting here reading a web page, some program on my system is causing a repeated two note sound effect - the second tone/beep higher - and I have no idea what program is doing it or how to find it (other than some big isolation project that might or might not find it).

It'll happen every couple second several times, then might go 30 seconds without it, then another, then another 30 seconds, then several again close together; it's sort of like the sound you might expect if you had an 'instant messenger' message come in (I don't use one).

Does it only do it when you are browsing the web? If so, try browsing in a private session with any extensions disabled to narrow it down.

If it is Win10, is it the notifications system?

I wish I could identify the sound, if I had a recording someone would probably recognize it. I went looking for some sample sounds to try to identify it, and the USB sounds were higher, 3 and 4 note sounds.

Oddly, after going on for perhaps 15 to 30 minutes as described, now it's had several minutes of no such sound, on its own. What changed? Who knows, but I played a game in the interim. I'd have to hear Windows 10 notification to tell you whether that's the sound.

Now I went through a video called 'all Windows 10 sounds', and it's not there; the closest one is the blocked pop-up at 3:38. The one in the video close, but higher pitched. But it might be onto something - maybe I have some software blocking pop-ups and for some reason it's activating a lot at times, but like dozens/hundreds of times in a row.

That's the cam-girl chat window open (possibly) hidden behind the "movie site" browser window that you're viewing...

Out of curiosity, have you tried to change the Windows 10 theme to see if the sound goes away?

I have not. But I have found a suspect: discord, and its messages that came in. I rarely run it. I wasn't seeing anything browsing the web, but then in a game, I saw messages (not labeled as Discord, but it appears the were) pop up with the sound effect. Killed discord, sound gone so far.
