Detail car now or in January?

Hey guys. I bought a new car recently and when I purchased it the sales manager promised that if I came in later he'd get me a free car detailing. This was on 10/22. Anyways, it's been about 6 weeks and I haven't washed the war or anything and after the rains of the last week the car isn't as shiny and as nice looking as I first got it. I was thinking of taking it in to get it detailed this week. I'm also going to on vacation for a month next week.

This may be an odd question, but would it be better to get it detailed before or after my trip with respect to car paint care and car cleanliness? Thanks!

I'd wait since a road trip is going to get it all dirty. But that's just me.

"Detailing" is just a chance for someone else to mess up something on your car.

This. Do some research and clean it yourself. Fairly enjoyable and rewarding plus peace of mind that someone didn't end up doing a poor job and ruining your car.

Dealer buff job? Careful now. I wouldn't let anyone detail my car unless they have a spectacular reputation or I've watched them work on a car or two before touching mine. One lazy or unskilled employee can destroy your paint in seconds.

When I've had a dealer say detail, they've always just meant a decent wash/wax, interior cleaning and not what people here would consider a "detail" but ymmv.

Wash every 2 weeks. On the in between weeks I use detailing spray to keep it clean. Wax every 8 weeks.

What about us busy/lazy people who live in apartments? Do you do this outside in the winter as well when it's freezing out?

I *gasp* actually run my cars through automatic washes, and they get occasional waxing from the valets where I park my car on trips (every 2 or 3 months).

It sounds like you spend more time washing your car than driving it

Nope. I spend a good amount of time driving which gets it dirty and there's no structure parking for our office so it's exposed during the day.

Since it's black it shows its dirt pretty quickly which bugs me but I enjoy keeping it clean so it's not a big deal.

Took it up the PCH to Monterey about 2-3 weeks ago and that was awesome. Couple weeks prior to that took it through the Angeles Crest Scenic Byway so I'm enjoying it a fair amount

I wash regularly in warm weather. In cold weather, I go through a touchless automatic wash.
