Destruction of mother boards

What does it take to destroy a mother board?

Ok, to be more specific, lets say the cables that connect the mother board to the power button and power LEDs are not plugged in right, that should not be enough to destroy the mother board when it is turned on?

The cable that connects the power button only completes a circuit, so it's reversable. If the hdd led is plugged in backwords, the led won't light but otherwise no problems.

The ATX power button just momenarily completes the circuit. It isn't polarized so it will work no matter which way you plug it in. LED's only conduct in one direction so, as Green Man said, the only thing that will happen if the leads are reversed is, it won't light.

To answer your first question, Turn it on and pour some water on it, that should destory a board real nicely.

Yes again was what Green Man and Harvey siad is 100% correct

running while dragging your feet on a shaggy carpet with wool socks then touching the board should kill it nicely too. 😉

I prefer much more violent measures than carpet! An aliminum baseball bat removes all doubt!

Actually, it's another adult diaper answer... it Depends! 😉

Depends on how well the mommaboard is circuit protected.

Depends on how well your power supply is circuit protected and all the way back to the breaker box and beyond.

Now, here's the bad news!

Remember all those...

Is it worth it?

threads? WE can't even get folks to spend more than $40.00 U.S. on a power supply much less the over $100.00 which is usually best, not just for overall power, but for advanced circuit protection as well. So!... what chance you think there is of a mommaboard maker spending time and money on what nobody will pay for?

Just change the purchase date on the sticker beyond the warranty and theres a good chance it will kill itself. These things have a mind of their own when it comes to dying just past warranty. 😉

I think you took my posts in not quite the way I expected... I mean to say that, yes, a baseball bat will destroy a mobo. Here is another question: lets
say I take an ATX mobo with a CPU and nothing more in it and plug in the twenty pin connector and the 4 pin connector and turn it on. Will it die (as in break beyon repair)?

nope. might beep unhappilly at you depending on the mobo. but no damage at all.

I had a case with a busted power switch, went to turn it on with a screwdriver, missed, large sparks, and it still works great. Try harder.
