We're struggling with our first chewing cat, as well. Can't have anything nice! And the second they get bored, they'll find something to chew on that you didn't put away.
I've replaced my showlaces a half dozen times this year alone.

In fairness to kitteh, you can destroy stock iPhone cables by just taking them out of the box. Apple hasn't quite figured that shiz out yet.

I think they used the same method when they invented AppleTalk cables... They found a couple of connectors in china that didn't fit anything else and plugged them into 2 Macs... They realized you could see the other computer when they were plugged together and AppleTalk was born. I don't think there was any actual engineering that went into it. (protocol or connectors)

My authentic/original Lightning cables are surprisingly durable. There's one at work that I can't keep away from the wheels of my chair. The color has faded and the texture is rough in some places, but the cable isn't frayed or worn-through and everything is 100%.

I have seen lots of 30-pin cables that can't tolerate frequent pocketing / travel and the cable jacket would separate from the tension reliever at one end or the other. I have never had this problem with my own. I have several that I leave at different locations...so I never carry them around or travel with them.
