Destroy my resume!

My resume.

Any large formatting issues I should change up? I do have four different fonts on it. The name is in Arial Black 10. Main text is in Garamond 10. The large section headings are in Tahoma 10 bold. The dates are in Garamond 10 bold. Is that too much? I think it flows well personally, but then again I'm not getting a whole lot of callbacks on my resume.

Then for the content, is there really much to fix? I think the weakest part is my objective but I have no clue how to word it any better. My job experience is my strong point so I'd like to keep it before the education. Do I have too many courses listed? I'm not sure what else I'd put in to take up the space.

Thanks everyone!

Edit: Scroll down for newer versions.

Looks like you did it in MS Word. Make it look like you didn't do it in MS Word.

Edit: You left off Elite Member on Anandtech Forums, and "References available upon request" should not be a bullet statement, it should be at the bottom by itself if it's on there at all (it's assumed)

Also, increase your GPA to 3.6 or above. And remove the objective, they're "out of style" because everyone knows they're complete BS anyway. Your objective is to get a job.

(One of those was serious 😉)

Alright, the references part is leaving.

How do you suggest I make it not look like I used Word?

And Yossarian, shut yo trap. 😛

Now, that's the hard part. 😉 My wife does that sort of stuff, so she did mine for me in Quark. I'm having a hard time putting my finger on what about it is bugging me...

Using different glyphs for your bullets would be a good start I think... nothing absurd like a big finger pointing to the right, but something that they don't look at every day of their lives. 🙂

The education section is... kind of confusing. Start by leaving out the courses you've taken or are enrolled in. They know what's involved in an engineering degree. 🙂 Use the extra space to add more awards and honors if you can come up with any... have you held any leadership positions? Been involved in any clubs?

Edit: get rid of all of the colons, they're unneccessary.

Take 2.

I changed up the bullets and removed the colons. Would a divider line between the addresses and the object be a good idea? It doesn't have a very rigid form right now.

I agree the education section is a bit confusing, but I have no idea at all how to fix it. I need to leave the courses in there because I don't really have any content to replace it with. I'm not in any sort of academic clubs or honor societies here, and I somehow think adding that I've had basketball and football season tickets for four years won't impress recruiters much. 😉

put something that interests you near the bottom as an activity. usually it gives you something to talk about during your interview outside of just the job and school

With divider line.

I think the line adds a nice touch.

Good idea Albis. I'll add weight lifting to the bottom as an activity. It's a good conversation starter because people see me and think "You, weightlift?!" Little do they know how much weight I've put on to just begin to look like a normal weight.

I notice under your Work experience for each company you put

Company Name
Address
Phone

I would leave out the phone numbers to those companies and only provide those upon request. And is your title really Engineering Department Internship, it sounds so generic

Don't you have a work title to put instead of Internship 3 times? If you don't know what to put, ask your former employers, but I can tell you that a real job title will be worth a little bit more, just so that it catches the eye of the recruiter right away rather then having to read the bullet points to know what you did at the internship. For instance, one of my old CS intern jobs while I was in college, I had Student Worker, which got changed to Junior Web Developer. The average resumer reviewer spend 20-30 seconds on a resume before deciding if it goes on the crap pile, or on the review again pile. The resume also seems too 'full' and colluted, couldn't you make the resume 1 1/2 or 2 pages, while putting the details of your jobs directly under the related position, rather then on the side?

The good news is that you have lots of credentials and applicable experience coming directly out of college. That's a big plus and you will have a distinct edge over others who didn't do an internship.

I think some horizontal rules look nice... I believe on my resume I have one [edit: a very thin one] under each section header. Gives the page more structure I think.

Don't do that. Keep it work/career related.
However, do talk about other things if you can work it during the interview.

Get rid of the GPA. Conventional wisdom is don't list it unless you have a 4.0. As somebody said the objective portion of the resume is out of style. Your objective is pretty damn clear: You want a job.

I too would remove the address and phone number. It is, in a way, not relevant information. Furthermore if/when you fill out a formal job application they will ask for that information there.

I would move your experience and skills to the top because, well frankly that is what you are trying to sell yourself on.

For now I think the horizontal bar is fine, but I wouldn't add more than one.

Besides my input, this is one of the better resumes I have seen posted on ATOT.

That really was the title. At those two companies they pretty much made a job for me. It was one of those situations where they had a lot of little stuff that needed done, and decided I could do it for them for fairly cheap.

I had really put those titles in there so I could differentiate the EHS internship, but I'm not sure I need to. Maybe I'll just delete the titles entirely and change that overall area heading to "Internship Experience" rather than "Work Experience."

His GPA isnt that bad, not for an engineer. I'd keep it on there. If it was anything less than 3.2 I'd probably leave it off.

Looks good, but I agree with the job title change others suggested. Also, perhaps something more under computers experience and skills? I'm in CE, but it seems as if MEs should have more such knowledge? If not, ignore me.

I had internships where my title was literally "Summer College Intern" or just Intern, I just rewrote it as something a bit more descriptive in my resume.

Bad advice.
I work as a scientist and I understand that a 3.2 is not a bad GPA, but you still do not want to list it. For example on the off chance that another applicant did list their GPA and it was, for example a 3.7 your chances just went down the drain simply because of that.
Furthermore most employers do not give a rat's ass what your GPA is. It will come out quickly enough if you know or don't know your stuff.

As somebody who works in a technical field (research analytical chemistry) for six years, my advice is not to list the GPA; it can only hurt you.

Take 3.

GPA is gone. I do have a question about that. At the career fair this fall I noticed many recruiters looking for my GPA, circling it, and commenting "nice GPA" or whatever. By not having it on there and making them ask about it am I going to bother them? I also don't want to seem like I'm trying to hide something, as at UIUC a 3.2 is a damn good GPA in engineering. Sure there are the usual crazy people with 4.0s here, but many, many people have GPAs much lower than I do.

Also for Take 3 I eliminated all my course listings and replaced them with a large description of my senior design project and the related tasks. I also eliminated the job titles.

I think I'm going to leave the objective in there unless I can find a better way to indicate the field of mechanical engineering I'm looking for. I want little to do with design engineering.

Don't take your GPA off dude. If they don't see it, they'll probably think its *really* bad and not consider it.

I think I might post my resume here to get ripped to pieces...thanks for the idea.

Yeah after thinking about it I'm going to put it back on. I'd rather take my chance on the few people here with a 3.7 beating me out, and me having the upper hand on everyone with a lower GPA.

And thanks Goosemaster. 🙂 Hard to believe it's going to be over in 6 months. 🙁
