i've been invited to a wedding in kuala lumpur, malaysia by a pretty close friend of mine. his family is decently well off and they are having a HUGE wedding there. am i supposed to front the plane ticket and other travel expenses or will i be receiving this w/ my invitation? i would be staying at his estate while i am there, i guess. anyone have any experience with this?

Depends, usually ifpeople are having an away wedding the wedding party is paid for...

but it depends wedding to wedding. At the least if you have free accommodation then i'd say go Malaysia is a sweet country.

i am just a guest. i am not part of the groom's wedding party in the traditional sense of best man/ groomsman that is reserved for his 4 brothers.

Depends, why don't you ask your friend?

well i don't wanna ask him because he might feel guilty if i have to pay, and i don't wanna seem like a chump if its gonna be with the invitation. i just wanted to know standard operating procedure on this type of bidniz.

i'm guessing that you'll have to pay your way. But if you get free room/board while you're there, i'd go. think of it as a half priced vacation to a nice destination

I flew a lot of my family to India for my wedding. We paid for it upfront and just gave them the information. I'm not sure that's how it works for everyone, but I'd assume that if they're going to cover your costs that you'd get them with the invitation; to me, it would be odd to pay upfront and then receive/ask for reimbursement.

Are you sure they're covering it? I told my friends that they're welcome to go, but they'd be paying their own way. They're likely incurring a tremendous expense already with just family.

If he hasn't already said something about covering it, you're paying. That is most typical with destination weddings, and they're usually pretty small affairs unless there is local family and friends.

Not only are you paying for your plane ticket, you should not assume you can stay with him when you get there. He'll probably have relatives staying with him.

In summary, don't go.

Yeah, I wouldn't pay to travel overseas for a wedding.
