I realize this is a little long, but I want to make sure I don't leave out anything important. Anyway, here goes:
I purchased a refurbished Leadtek px6800gt off of Newegg around four months ago. It worked quite well for about six weeks and then I moved the computer it was in about 300 miles in the trunk of my car. I put various luggage and things around the computer to help cushion it during the trip, and it was a relatively smooth trip along the interstate. I've taken computers on trips on plenty of occasions before and never had a problem, so I didn't expect this time to be any different. Well, something seemed to go wrong.
When I got to my destination and plugged up the computer, I couldn't get a video signal. I was quite worried, so I managed to borrow another pci-express card to test out in the computer. It worked fine with the new card, although it was an fx-series that required far less power than the 6800gt. I assumed the graphics card was bad, so I managed to get my hands on an old mx4000 pci card to use until I could RMA the 6800gt. I continued using the computer with no problems for several weeks with the mx4000.
It took Leadtek over a month to get me my new card, and when it finally came, it did put out a video signal, but it had this sort of garbled color all over it and would only work at certain resolutions and refresh rates. With the first card, the computer would not recognize it at all when started up with the PCI MX4000 card used to get a signal. This second card was recognized, but the signal was too poor to use on any real basis. Since I had already tested the motherboard with another pci-express card, and since this card was acting quite differently than the first, I just assumed this card was DOA.
At this point, I contacted Leadtek again and arranged for another replacement, which they promised to test and cross-ship for me (although I might add it still took over two weeks for them to get it here). When I received the new, supposedly "tested" card, it acted very similar to the second, although it would work in almost every resolution and the signal was a little clearer. At this point, I really just don't know whether the card is defective or if something else is wrong. Unfortunately, I don't really have another computer available with both PCI-express capability and a PSU to really support the card for testing.
So what I was wondering is if anyone has an opinion as to what I should do at this point. I suspect that the card is bad, but I don't really want to have a fit with Leadtek until I'm a little more assured. If it was something like the motherboard or PSU, I wouldn't mind buying a new one, but the evidence I have doesn't seem strong enough to make me think there is anything wrong with either of those parts, as the computer works fine except with the 6800gt.
Anyway, thanks for reading and I sure would appreciate some advice.
