I'll apologize ahead of time for the length of this post. Here's the problem: For the last two weeks or so, I've had major problems trying to get domain names to resolve using Microsoft Network. What happens is this: When I dial in (no problems, as usual) and launch IE5.1 w/SP1, in the taskbar it just sits at 'Finding site: blabla'. Eventually it times out, but it gets worse. In order to get any page to even try to resolve after that, I have to clear Temp. Internet Files between 3 and 5 times. If I don't take that step, it automatically brings up the 'res://D:\WINNT\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm'. However, I can ping sites and it brings up sites that are bookmarket by their IP automatically. I started to suspect my modem after trying so many other things, but I downloaded/installed/ran NetZero and had no problems going places. Prior to that, I had taken several steps:
1. Uninstall/reinstall modem driver
2. Uninstall TCP/IP, clear WinSock registry entries, reboot, reinstall TCP/IP
3. Install a clean Windows 2000 image (this happens in WinME too, btw)
Then I contacted MSN live tech. support. They basically told me straight up that DNS issues were beyond their level of expertise. I have searched about everywhere and tried so many things and am running out of patience. I would've just walked away from MSN by now, but good ISP's are hard to come by in this area. I'm running on a Conexant HCF 56k modem and like I said, it worked with NetZero of all services. I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
