Desperate help needed with Genesys USB adapter! under Linux!

I have two papers - due tomorrow - on a hard drive. I put them there under Windows using a cheap Genesys USB to IDE convertor.

However, under Xubuntu (Edgy Eft), it gives me an error message. (I'm a total newbie - I just installed linux today - and this is what came out when I entered tail /var/log/messages.)

Jan 22 01:24:27 Mercury kernel: [17187918.148000] usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22
Jan 22 01:24:27 Mercury kernel: [17187918.280000] usb 4-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Jan 22 01:24:27 Mercury kernel: [17187918.280000] scsi10 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Jan 22 01:24:38 Mercury kernel: [17187929.004000] usb 4-4: USB disconnect, address 22
Jan 22 01:24:38 Mercury kernel: [17187929.004000] 10:0:0:0: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery

I know Genesys adapters are problematic - something about max_sectors needing to be set to 64 - but I've also read that that's part of the kernel.

What do I do now?

I have no idea about the USB to IDE converter.

Can't you just go back to Windows and get your files that way?

I found this:

Looks like it may be buggy hardware.

Try using a powered USB hub if you have one to place between your computer and the device.

Otherwise try disabling EHCI support in your system's BIOS. (somewere in the interegrated prepherials or something like that) This turns off USB 2.0 support and you will still have USB 1.1 support... I've had to do this with one USB doo-dad I own.
