Desparately seeking advice on this weird video/PnP/windows? issue.

I'm having this odd issue with my system: At random times, I'll hear windows (XP) make the "device connect/new hardware found" sound. Sometimes also, as I hear this sound, my screen will go blank for a second.

I can *SEMI* reproduce this on occasion if I load up my display properties and click the "advanced" tab, although when I do this, I can only get it to do it around 1 out of every 15-20 times, and usually with several minutes inbetween.

I'm concerned that my video card may be going bad or have some fault with it, and I'd like to get it replaced if so. What my question really is here, is is there any possible explaination for the system behaving this way other than a faulty card? I'll list below everthing I've tried so far.

I've tried several different driver revisions, several different mainboard BIOS revisions also.
All windows updates are current.
Windows XP SP2 is installed with directx 9.0c
I've tried the card in another system also and had the same issue. (p4 and AMD, 350 & 400W power supplies respectively).

If anyone has any suggestions at all I'd be immensely grateful, I'm having no luck with tech support (two weeks after emailing them they reply and suggest I reinstall the drivers).

Basic system spec (if it helps) is:
Geforce 6800GT (XFX branded)
Intel 865 chipset mainboard (intel brand)
P4 3.2 Northwood
1gb DDR400 ram (dual channel)
Many thanks in advance.

I'd use "driver cleaner" and reinstall the drivers. If that doesn't fix the problem, and since it does it on other systems, I'd say you need to RMA the card.

Thanks for the replies guys, I've had a weird thing with this now.. Tried a different monitor, a new LCD instead of my old CRT one, and the problem hasn't happened once. Is there any chance a faulty monitor could cause this? or is it still likely to be the card? thanks!

It could have been the CRT's cable. It may have been loose or it may be bad. It probably kept disconnecting and reconnecting, causing the blank screen when it got loose and the windows new hardware sound when it made contact again.

Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

I've now tried another CRT monitor (same type and brand) with a new cable also. I get the same issue still with both CRT monitors but not with the LCD one.

Possible that the card has a problem with that *exact* type and brand of monitor, or is the card most likely faulty?

thanks again.

Is the LCD hooked up to the same connector on the vid card?

Is it possible that the default refresh rate is too high for the CRT's?

Yup the LCD was hooked up to the same output port on the card as the CRT's. Refresh rate is about the only thing I'm left with now like you say. Although the LCD ran fine at 75Hz, no problems at all, the CRT's have problems at 85, so I backed it off to 75. They still had problems unfortunately.

I'm not really sure where to go with this new, tech support reached a new pinnacle of uselessness in telling me that the monitor was my problem (they didn't seem to read my email where I told them I'd tried 3 different monitors, and experienced the fault on all of them bar the LCD).

Now my visuals in 3d stuff are starting to screw up.. like complete loss of some textures at random times too. Wish the tech support would even BEGIN to acknowledge that the card at least *might* be faulty. They've just told me to reinstall the drivers 🙁 I feel like I'm going around in circles.

XFX seems to have the worst support I've EVER dealt with.
