What are good free sites for desktops/backgrounds? I was using webshots for awhile but I don't want to pay any more

You should NEVER pay for backgrounds, EVER. There are so many awesome free ones out there, it's not worth it. If you like cars, this is the best for that. If you like beautiful space shots, go here. I would recommend deaddreamer, but his site has been funky lately. Down for a while, and now having issues of another sort. Looks like he's hosting it on a 56k modem right now.

Wincustomize is good as well, but you do have to register to download.

I thought that windowblinds ate lots of systems resources

you can go to wincustomize just to get content, not necessarily use windows blinds. But some of the files available are only in windows blinds format, you'll just have to ignore those.
