Desktop wireless working extremely poorly, laptop great...

I have a laptop with a built-in wireless card which works great. It receives an Excellent signal quality from my wireless. I've been trying to put a wireless adapter in my desktop. First I got a Belkin USB wireless adapter. It didn't work well at all, so I returned it and got a PCI D-Link DWL-G510 Wirelss G desktop adapter. However, the wireless connection for the desktop is still horrible. The signal quality is extremely low. On the D-Link software, it claims that the wireless signal strength is at 4%.

Is there any reason for this? I'm wondering why the laptop has such great reception but the desktop products have a horrible one. Should I be buying a better wireless adapter?

Both the laptop and desktop are in the same room.

also, invest in an antenna booster.

I can't really move it any closer. Both the laptop and desktop are in the same room. Does a laptop have a much better antenna/adapter than a desktop? If so, is there a desktop equivalent that works as well?

is the desktop under the desk? is the desk made of metal? there could be many things in your room that can hose up the wireless signal.
