Desktop style cases making a comeback?

It used to be all you could get---desktop style cases. Then they went out of fashion for years. And now, it seems they're back, especially HTPC style ones.

I used to hate them but after purchasing a large widescreen LCD monitor I found I had less "horizontal" space on my desk so I opted for a desktop style case. Now I have more space on the desk! Plus it doesn't look ugly if I stick it in the cabinet in the livingroom for home theatre use.

So with the desktop space it saves by placing the LCD monitor on top, plus being able to fit aesthetically in the livingroom, are most people still buying tower style cases, and if so, why?

I don't buy a case for "style" or some other subjective intangible. I like to be able to work in a case and not be cramped. Plenty of space means good air circulation, etc.

If I want something for the home entertyainment system, that would be a separate buy. In the meantime, my working computer goes under the desk on the floor, and is out of sight. But easy to work in.

I'll probably stick with a standard tower except for special purposes. Most folks don't have enough desk surface any more for a desktop case. People only used them in the old days because that's all they made - if it was good enough for IBM, then it was good enough for the cloners. Someone made a stand to hold the IBM AT vertically on the floor and the full-tower was born (size 23" plus the stand high)... The Taiwanese cloners latched onto the idea and it's been the same with minor variations ever since. 😉

Yep! I got one of those stands for my IBM PC way back in 1984, and it has been on the floor ever since.

Thanks for the memory, Zep! 🙂

I like the old school look and feel of the desktop cases. But they don't hold as many drives and space in more limited for tall HS. They can be modded, but generally their air flow isn't as good as a mid or full tower.
>> Sweet << 😉
