I bought a KDS VS7i monitor for a system I just built. When I open a window, there is a noticeable shift of the desktop to the left. When I minimize or close the window, the desktop shifts back to the right. I've only seen this kind of thing on old monitors that were about to give up the ghost; not a brand new monitor.
Curious, I checked the monitors on my systems: a one year old 19" KDS, a two year old 17" Sony, and a four year old 15" NEC. The 17" Sony does not do it. The 19" KDS has a barely perceptible shift (I never even noticed it until I went looking), and the 15" NEC really shifts left and up (I picked it off a junk pile, so I don't care).
The Sony is aperture grill. Both KDS's and the NEC are shadow mask. Questions:
Is this normal for shadow mask monitors?
Should I take this 17" KDS back?
Should I consider the 17" Viewsonic Optiquest?
This system is for my dad, and I've been instructed to keep the cost down. I spread the budget over the entire system, so that's why I'm shopping a low to mid end 17" monitor (under $200). He's 70 years old, so he might not even notice the desktop shifting. But I know it's there, and would rather it not be. Besides, I don't want it to be a harbinger of things to come.
Thanks.
