Desktop Palomino to come in new thinner Organic Packaging

According to our sources, AMD informed the mainboard manufacturers that its new desktop processor based on the Palomino core expected to come out in September will be designed in a new package. The changes imply that to simplify the manufacturing process AMD will use organic package for the new Athlon Model 6 (Palomino die) instead of the old ceramic package now used for all Athlon processors. This way, the new Athlon in organic package will look very much like Intel FC-PGA CPUs.

i wonder why they only made the switch with the Desktop Palomino though? since both the Mobile and MP Palomino come in the regular ceramic packaging, maybe its cheaper to produce since the Desktop version will be the most mass produced version of the Palomino?

Well - covering the cores is more of a pleasant by-effect with Intel.

With 0.13 microns, the core is a lot smaller too. However, more heat is generated on a smaller area - therfore a heatspreader is a sensible option. The fact that the heatspreader serves to protect the core from physical damage is quite a handy benefit I don't mind at all.

Wonder really why AMD haven't done it ... broken too many of their core's if one has to switch them (or rather their heatsinks) around a lot ... such as in a lab testing environment. Ah well ...

Good catch. Thanks for sharing it w/us. I'm very concerned that the core is going to be thinner. TBirds already shatter like glass...now I'm really scared. I can just see me all happy, installing my new 1.75GHz Pally, clipping my FOP32-1 clip on it, I can't wait to boot this..**SNAP!** Oh sh*t!!! $300 down the drain. I won't be first in line...I still want one though!

I`m also concerned, AMD must know that alot of cores have been damaged on install and so are pretty fragile or don`t they care?

Hmm. Maybe the &quot;organic material&quot; will be carbon fiber? Or kevlar?

Perhaps the core thickness is the same, but it is further imbedded into the organic packaging. Of course, unless the went to a smaller micron process to save silicon space. I guess it would make more sense to reduce thickness than make a smaller core/surface area....well, in terms of thermal conductivity that is. Don't know about electrical efficiency
