Is this before or after most of the buyers wipe Linux and install a pirated copy of Windows?;)

True enough.. My wife and I have an original Eee with Linux and the OS is an abomination. None of the software update features work, all resulting in errors. I also really like it's "instant shutdown" button that requires 3 distinct mouse moves and button pushes to turn it off.

I used that for maybe 2 days before installing a real OS on my eee701. I don't think anyone really took that attempt seriously.

WoW! That's ironic!

Throw out the quisling's comment...

1 guy (me) runs Linux Mint 7 on his netty -- 2 guys run MS.

That's 32% Linux, 68% Windows, just like the article says! :)

Not terribly surprising considering that all one does on a Netbook is web browse and that's one of the things that Linux can do and Linux is cheaper than Windows.

MS is going to lose even more of the netbook market when ppl see "Starter". LoL!

http://blogs.computerworld.com/15075/windows_7_on_netbooks_maybe_its_not_a_linux_killer (ComputerWorld | Windows 7 on netbooks: Maybe it's not a Linux killer)

[...]Computerworld just published the results of a survey from the shopping site Retrevo.com, which found that 61% of people don't know that there's a difference between Windows 7 and the Windows 7 Starter Edition — and that 56% of those who then found out the differences between the two said they would not be happy with Starter Edition.

The Computerworld article notes that, according to Retrevo.com, 23 out of 28 netbooks sold on Amazon.com are equipped with Starter Edition, which means a lot of potentially unhappy Windows customers.[...]

Well, it's a bit surprising since actual delivered netbooks were reported to be about 10% Linux. Originally, they were almost all Linux, but that shifted to almost all Windows this year. The research report quoted by ComputerWorld says that much of the demand for Linux netbooks "will be driven by consumers in less developed countries...".

It seems reasonable that building ultra-low-cost netbooks for those markets might favor Linux.

My favorite quote...

While U.S. consumers sometimes appear to have a love-hate relationship with Windows, those non-U.S. consumers have less experience with Windows -- and thus less reliance[...]

Kinda sad that U.S. consumers are so reliant on one OS! :\

There are a lot of users who panic and become completely nonfunctional with their computers if the Start button looks different or moves position. Its pathetic.

Relating to the article, I'm also willing to be that a larger percentage of people wipe Windows and install a Linux distro pretty quick. My old eeepc almost never ran XP, it was much faster with Easy Peasy on it.

Half of my netbooks run OpenBSD, half Linux, and half Windows. :p

Team: That's impossible no one can give more than 100 percent. By definition that's the most any one can give

It's hard to beat free. Without having to charge for a MS license, linux helps keep the netbook price down. It's as simple as that.
