Desktop LCD vs. laptop LCD

I remember when i purchased a 15" laptop in 2002
it would do 1600x1200

looking at the newest LCD's they have out right now, i can't help but wonder why they are still using such low resolutions on these things.

have to go all the way up to 24" just to break 1600x1200 realestate

is there less DPI or pixels per inch on the desktop lcd's ?
is this to save money ?

can we expect 24" LCD's with higher resolutions anytime soon (2560x1600 atleast) ?

Lenovo has a 22" 1920x1200 (also Samsung IIRC). There are also some 22" 1920x1080.

Some new Samsungs.

I don't know if I speak for the majority of desktop users when I say this, but my monitor is at least a yard away from me when I'm using my desktop. My 20" display is perfect at 1680x1050 - if it was 1920x1200, for instance, the added resolution would be pointless at the distance I use it at. I'm guessing the main reason most desktop panels have lower DPI than those laptop panels is because of this (in general, desktop LCDs are further from the user's eyes than laptop LCDs are).

Of course, if there's a significant demand in the market for high DPI desktop panels then one of the manufacturers will try to supply it. Then perhaps Soulkeeper will get his "laptop DPI" panels in 24" desktop format.

The sad fact is most end users whine and cry when the LCD is at 1280x1024.

People are blind.
