My personal machines, no icons at all. I do use the Desktop as a temporary storage area, though. It's actually a bit of a mess. On my machine at work, there's a few for things I use a lot. At home, though, I'd rather see my wallpaper and just click the Start menu to get those frequently-used programs.

I would venture to say at least 50% of my left screen is covered with icons and shortcuts to folders and programs. The right screen is free and clean though.

1 Icon here, the Recycle Bin. I need to get Objectdock running again, and maybe Konfabulator if yahoo hasn't messed it up too much.

I don't use them at all either. The only desktop icon I have is my recycle bin

None of what I do resembles windows 98 in any way. In fact, it doesn't resemble windows at all. What I do in fact makes my system MORE readily available and easier to tweak. I wouldn't do it otherwise. I've learned lots of tricks over the years to make explorer cleaner and with more functionality, until I switched to an entirely new shell which is even easier to tweak and offer even more functionality. While everyone else downloads plugins, addons, and whatnot, Litestep themes download and install them for you. It's a very streamlined way to enhance your GUI to offer anything you want.

While I go the minimalist way, there are overly graphic themes as well. If you want more, you can get more. If you want less, you can get less. But the minimalist themes are still easy to use, though they may not seem so when you first see screenshots.

I never said it resembles Windows 98! I just said it was the era of when I remember the themes for Windows first coming out and it was when people wanted to change the look of Windows more than ever. ;)

I do enjoy the change in the taskbar, colors, etc. I do NOT personally enjoy having to tweak, setup, and configure programs like Konfabulator (albiet them being easy to use), ObjectDesktop, nLite (I think that's the right name), and so forth. I do have the UXTHEME.DLL mod applied and I like changing the theme. Anything more is too much time wasted. I like going back to Windows Classic every now and then, too.

I remove all icons from my desktop as well. My favorite desktop is fluxbox; too bad there's not a seemless and high quality equivalent for WinXP.

I keep them all on my smaller monitor and keep my 2005 FPW clean with a nice wallpaper

I'm another litestep user myself, so I don't have any icons on my desktop.
