Desktop Icons suddenly disappear

I have seen this on 2 of our computers: Both Win 7 64 and both gaming rigs.
One is an ROG laptop, 3 yrs old, the other a brand new build. Programs are not being deleted, but the desktop icons are suddenly rearranged or in the case of the new computer they just disappear!😱 On the new build, the icons were shortcuts to various diagnostic tools. What is causing this?

Do you have kids as this type of thing happens when pc is left unattended.

Do you have Infrarecorder installed on both of your computers? If so that is most likely the culprit. Try uninstalling it and see if that helps, there are other free CD burners out there which do not have these issues.

No kids, no Infrarecorder. This happens after a shutdown; when I restart, the Icons are changed. This does not happen all the time, only occasionally.

There are viruses that set the hidden attribute on files, do a good scan.

I would run a scan in safe mode after a run in windows

Thanks for your help. Solved the issue on the new computer. Will run scan on laptop.
