Desktop icons hosed

Windows 7 Pro 64bit. This months Tuesday update terminated with failed update due to lack of space. At that point most of my desktop icons had the simple white box icon overlaid on top of the correct icon.
I can't fix them through the Properties box. It lets me select a new icon but the overlay stays on top.

I have deleted the iconcache.db from both my user and the administrator. I noticed the Desktop folder under both was marked ReadOnly. I undid that but no change.

The built in Windows icons (RecycleBin, Computer, Network, etc) are fine.

I did clear space and re-did the updates just fine.

Help!

Oh, and the first person that says re-install Windows will have the worst possible karma wished upon them! 🙂

In most cases, if you delete the icon cache and reboot, it should be rebuilt. As for overlays, for years I have eliminated them with good old Microangelo.

Not sure what Microangelo can do here. In some of the cases I am using the icon buried in the executable. They look fine in the selection box.

Using small icons the actual icon gets covered. Changing to large icons the problem overlay is in the lower left. This 'smells' familiar but my 70 year old brain just does not remember. I already went into Folder Options and checked and unchecked the Use Check boxes option.

Microangelo can get rid of the overlays. I customize all my desktop icons in matching 3D frames. I have a big library of them that is duplicated. Also cursors.

I knew it was familiar. The lower left of an icon for the little arrow indicating it is a shortcut.

I went to \HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile in the Registry and deleted ISshortcut entry. Reboot and icons are normal again.
