Desktop Fusion comes in 2010

Intel to beat it to market

We've learned that Swift is the first Fusion that should launch in second half of 2008 and it will be exclusively a mobile part. After that, at some point in 2010, AMD plans to shift the Fusion CPU with an integrated GPU for desktop.

This is an interesting development if true, the 2010 part that is.

I can't say I am surprised by the timing IF the other recent rumor of this being fabbed at TSMC is true as 2010 is the right timing for TSMC's 45nm high-performance node they are developing for producing the 45nm SUN microprocessor chips as well.

I don't see anything bad for AMD here, being first to market with the budget market chips doesn't score you any extra bonus points as far as I am aware. Sure you lose corporate bragging rights, but I don't think anyone in AMD really cared that the Pentium D's were released before the X2's, the X2's still carried monsterous gross margins when they came to market.

Is swift a fusion product? In that case, if it comes out by the end of the year, isn't AMD first anyway, just only for mobile products (which honestly are where it's needed most)?

AMD roadmaps put Swift at H209, so it's probably a misprint.

My understanding is that yes swift will be the "first" fusion product released to market but it will be an MCM'ed GPU/CPU part and not a monolithic part like the desktop Fusion product and like the Intel part. (just my impression)

well, AMD will be producing the CPU and GPU for fusion and selling them individually before they put them on one die, at least that is what the roadmaps say.

IIRC there are no plans for AMD to produce (as in mfg) a GPU in there own fabs. All indications and statements to date are in keeping with GPU production at the foundries.
