Desktop folders don't open 8.1

My wife had a problem with her 3 week old Asus laptop today.
It came pre-installed with win 8.1 64bit.

She uploaded pixs from her camera, which has worked fine in the past with this machine.

The photos didn't show up in the designated folder in the beginning, then she found that she could not open any folder on the desktop. So she reboot, and the problem was still there.
I found that when you double clicked on a folder, it showed up on the file explorer icon in the task bar, but clicking on the small folder would still not open it. You could open as many folders as you want, and would show up in the file explorer, but nothing opens.

You can not open any folder on the computer, but go online, and open some of the apps from the tiles on the start page!

I think somehow something got corrupted along the path, but was beyond me.

As luck would have it, I tried restore with not much faith, but it did fix it.

Does anyone have any idea to what went wrong? Was it user error, or a buggy install on a new computer?

Right click on the folder on the desktop, select properties, and it will tell you the location of that folder, and the type (should say File folder).
If you need more help, take a screen shot of the dialog, and post it.

Thanks for the fast reply, but after the restore(back to the 10th) the system is back to normal.
At this point, I'm just trying to find out what went wrong.
I did your suggestion when it was in this state(folders wouldn't open), and did right click and got the drop down with properties, but that did not respond either!
Very strange. I hope it's not some type of hardware failure.

More likely a virus (or malware of some sort). Even though you did a restore, I would go to ESET and run the free online scanner. Make sure to select the option for removal of PUPs and check the first three options under Advanced.

It will take quite some time to run.
