Desktop doesn't update itself automatically

I just got this silly problem. Just bought a new computer and I've been installing programs for years by now. Suddenly when I'm downloading a small program to my desktop I notice that it doesn't appear if I don't update the desktop myself. I've never had this problem before. What might be the problem here and how do I solve it?

Btw, I moved the desktop folder to another harddrive, but my buddy has done that too and it still works for him

Edit: I use Windows XP Professional with sp2
