desktop display looks too big

i tried with the desktop display properties setting, change it to 1240x1048 but it looks like 800x600. i'm using a samsung lcd display n thus tried the automatic configuration and still no avail. in fact, display is so big that some edges of the display is partially cut off.help pls....
