I got a hack from softpedia called XP Royale... It gives windows XP the theme from XP Media Center, which I am quite fond of. Zero extra overhead beyond the regular windows blue theme.

ok i am primarily a windows xp user. i have tried some before, and found that they hog memory like crazy. is there a program that is balanced between usability and resource conservation?

Uxtheme.dll patched is a quick way for a decent visual boost. There's some nice visual styles out there (I'm using CodeOpus right now) on deviantart and customize.org as well as tons of others. I dont think it uses any more memory than the standard XP visual style.

Litestep was good but I havent used it in many many years. This will require a lot more time probably. Otherwise there is a dockbar like yzdock and konfabulator has a lot of widgets.

Object Desktop software seems to work well, though they do seem to be sort of resource-hoggish. They're also not free...

first google link :)
Then just search for 'visual styles' or anything like that to get ones to use. Theres quite a few good sites out there with ranked visual styles. I extract mine to c:\windows\resources\themes\ though you can do it anywhere and double-click the .theme or .msstyles files
