desktop cpu vs laptop cpu

getting ready to purchase new desktop. looking at i7 processor. surf internet. some on line games. read some dell computers use laptop cpu's. how do you tell? any recommendations for cpu and gpu match. spending $1000-$1500 range. Thank you very much!

The processor model number (e.g. Intel Core i7-6700K) should be enough to tell you all you need if you google it. Same goes for the GPU if you want a discrete one.

Thanks. I read on this site that Dell had put Laptop processors in some of their desktops and performed poorly. Any personal recommendations for an out of the box desktop in $750 - $1500 range? Or any ones I should avoid? Is 16GB and 1TB enough for the average user. Thank you very much

For your uses, you shouldn't need more than this Acer with Skylake quad-core. You may want to add memory or a video card for playing more high end games, but this is a decent machine & good value.

Thanks. Looking to get i7 processor for the long term benefit. Probably more than 8 GB. Others share the computer. Is Acer a good, reliable product? I usually buy new every 4-5 years. Have always had Dell at home and HP at work.

During this time of year, there are many good sales on PCs.

If you don't want to build one, which it sounds like you don't want to do, is watch for sales from Dell, Costco, Microsoft Store, etc.

This sale is expired, but Dell had its XPS 8910 tower on sale recently for around $550:

There will be more deals like this soon.

The nice thing is the XPS ships with 460w power supplies, which can easily handle mid-range GPUs like the GTX 1060 or RX 480.

Thanks. I am already over my head and now you mention power supplies. GTX 1060 seems quite advanced. is a 960 a good choice? Or a 750Ti?

Good choice is dependent on what you will do with your PC. If you don't play demanding video games, about any discreet video card would be fine.

If you want to buy and play new video games on a 1080p monitor, one of the cards I mentioned would be a better choice.

The one thing you do want in a modern computer to make it "fast", is a SSD with your operating system on it. It might be the single biggest improvement in overall system responsiveness.

Definitely not playing demanding, 3D, VR games. But thank you very much about the SSD. Seems like a lot of the computers do not have this. You've been very helpful!

If you are wanting to go the VR route, you are realistically looking at a GTX 1070. I believe they list the GTX 970 as the minimum, but usually only having the minimum specs will not give the best experience.

This system was $1100 yesterday (expired now), but I believe you can still get it for under $1500. This would be a great choice for VR,:
