Desktop BSOD all over the place

This computer has been up and running for years with no issues until yesterday.

Windows 7 pro
intel core 2 duo e8400
gigabit ga p31 es3g motherboard
msi n460gtx nvidia graphics
2x 250gb hd
2x2gb ram
soundblaster xifi
seagate 650w x series

A few days ago I heard something buzzing. It kind of sounded like a hard drive that was being too loud with an electrical buzz is how I would describe it. I got some airduster and carefully cleaned the case out. The computer booted and ran fine afterwords.

One day later(today) I booted it up to imediately a BSOD once windows had been started. I was on the desktop for about a minute. I can't keep it booted for more than a minute without a bsod. Each bluescreen gives me a different error. Sometimes it's pagefaultinnonpagearea, problems with ntfs.sys, pfnlist corrupt, win32.sys, dxgmm1.sys, readyboost.sys.... It's different every time.

What I have tried:

-Windows restore to a week earlier
-windows recovery off the install disc
-windows memory tester off install disc
-reinstalled windows (get blue screen during installation process sometimes)
-installed different hard drive and install windows on that(also bsod during install sometimes)
-loaded a live ubuntu cd and messed around for about 15 minutes with no crashes
-ran windows disc checker, it reported corrupt files all over the drive. This was after several bsods

I was able to get windows installed a couple of times after re-trying only to get bsod again and again.

I am sitting at a windows installation with an error instead of a bsod this time. It says "windows cannot install required files, file may be corrupt or missing....) I've used 2 different installation cds(home premium and a pro)

All OS software is legit.

Any ideas? I can access the hard drives just fine in the ubuntu live cd. They seem just fine. Temps are ok from what I have seen. Nothing has been changed in the bios in years.

Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Stop message during bsod during a windows install. Not in windows. 0x00000024

Info i got on it:
0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

Edit 2: I might have made this thread pre-maturely. Having some luck with only one stick of ram after trying with the other already. I'll update.

EDIT 3: bad stick of ram. nothing to see here folks. lol. This feels like a public shaming.

Run a full file system check on that disk just in case, IMO. Dodgy RAM could be a catalyst for data corruption which could snowball into actual NTFS BSODs at some point.

page fault in non page area is a ram error. It can be caused by other faulty hardware but that is the first place I would start.

Could be file system, bad spot on the hard drive, or a bad area of RAM. Memtest is not 100% on these, and I doubt the Linux install was using all the RAM.

I would start with chkdsk /r from a command prompt. If it finds and fixes problems, restart the PC and run it again. If it continues to find problems, the issue is with the hard drive.

If chkdsk stops finding problems and the computer continues to crash, remove a stick of RAM see what happens.

My bet is a bad capacitor on the motherboard leaked.

Look for blown leaky caps. Mounded and possibly split tops.

If it can make it through testing from the Windows DVD and run ubuntu, I don't think capacitors are giving him issues.

When you're all finished trying to help him troubleshoot his problem, perhaps you ought to read the BOLD bit of text in the OP! 🙂
