Deskstar sux? What's next?

I am being told that IBM Deskstar HDs are known to have a lot of troubles...60 & 75 GXP models. If so, what is the next brand of IDE HD that has the highest quality and dependability???

LOL@John!!!!!
Personal experience has made me prefer maxtor lately. They seem to be a bit cheaper, quieter, and Ive never had a Maxtor drive die on me (out of about 4 or 5) whereas I had one of the BB hot deal WD 60gb die within 2 days of owning it.

The 60GXP, to the best of my knowledge, lacks the faults of the 75GXP. Otherwise, Maxtor manufactures some fine drives.

The IBM 75GXP had extremely high RMA rates, the 60GXP series doesnt seem as prone to failure though. That said, after the 75GXP fiasco it'll be a long time before I'm comfortable buying an IBM IDE drive again.

Personally, if reliability is of the utmost importance I'd look towards Maxtor or Western Digital, probably giving the edge to Maxtor in terms of reliability.
The Seagate Barracuda IV looks like a decent alternative also.

The Maxtor D740X and Western Digital WDX00BB series of drives look to be the best at present.

hmmm i've had an ibm 75gxp for about 2 years now...and it still runs great...no signs of it dying...hopefully i will stay that way...hehe unless it poops out on me after the 3 year warranty 🙂

my brother also has a 60gxp and that has been working fine for him for a long time as well...i guess we have been lucky

I've had 9 maxtors over the years and never had one fail. Even the Maxtor drives I bought in the mid 90's are still running perfectly. The only drives I will not buy are WD, all four I have bought over several years failed within 1/2 year. That's just my opinion, lots of people like them. My favorite drives were maxtor and quantum, so the decision is easy for me now.

i personally like maxtor. they can sure take a beating and they're not too bad. WD are supposed to be good too but i never had one. I currently have a seagate on this machine and it's the quietest drive i've ever worked with.

Every Maxtor I've ever had has croaked on me. WD isn't much better. Fujitsu is something you use if there isn't anything else available.

Jza, as you can clealy see there is no "best" hard drive. Read some reviews on storagereview.com and make a decision.

Ive got a 45GB IBM 75GXP (ACKKK ! 😛 )....its made 3 'suspect' sounds in its lifetime (about 10months), 1 about a couple months back, and a couple about 6 months ago.....otehr than that its fine, and its performing fine, but i still just got me an 80GB Maxtor D740X....its true the 60GXP aint as bad, and i know the 120GXP is simply gonna spank the competition when it arrives quite shortly, but IBM aint getting no more custom from me for a while....my other maxtor has been a slid workhorse and has given me no problems, so im back with them unti such time as they dont fullfill my expectations. I dont enjoy owning a drive i cant trust.....so now i just dont need to trust it, its lumped with all the stuff i wouldnt care if i lost 🙂

I've had good luck with Maxtor and Western Digital. I have a 2 year old Maxtor 15 gig and I have a 7 year old Western Digital 2 gig and both run flawlessly, although the WD isn't quite as fast as i'd like, but it's not the drives fault, they were slow as hell when it was made.

I tend to like Maxtor a bit more than WD because I hear more good about Maxtor than WD, but like I said I have not had problems with either.

<< but IBM aint getting no more custom from me for a while >>

You hear a lot of that. In fact I had similar feelings when my 45 GB started croaking. You said it right though, "no IBM for a while". You'll be back if IBM keeps making decent products. The 75GXP troubles seemed a fluke...not all units were bad and it didn't mean all IBM drives will be bad in the future.

I've had the best luck of all of the major choices with the IBM's. Had a LOT of bad WD's a few years ago, but they seem to have improved, Maxtor........well, had two Maxtor fail me since last month!🙁 A 45Gb & a 30Gb.......Oh well, Maxtor RMA has always been pretty good to me so......🙂

interesting...sounds like there have been as many failed maxtors and wd on anandtechs as ibms...guess it never got to the scale of an ibm lawsuit though

JellyBaby.

Yup, the fact my drive has made any kind off not-normal-from-my-point-of-view noise in its life and belongs to the most notorious family/model, the 46.1GB IBM 75GXP means that despite the fact its never failed me and has run 24/7 for 99.9% of its life, i dont fully trust it - its been removed from a position of trust now. Ill be back with IBM one day, but the time to buy was now so that just narrowly ruled out the 120GXP, the maxtor is fastest overall just now (excepting 'SE' W.D's 😛 )...and then there was that little bit of me that said 'screw IBM' for the whole 75GXP thing 🙂
