Okay...I just lost my Deskstar 60GXP to some weird hard disk failure. Running Win2K with the 40GB version, I got a "unaccessible_boot_device" error. Erasing the drive fixed, (losing all data. :(), but I'm still pretty worried about the drive. This isn't the first time this has happened. I shut down one time, then the next time Win2k loads I get this crappy error.

Reading up on the error around the web hasn't made me too happy, either. Apparently people are having trouble with this drive as well - so I figured I'd check around Anandtech and see what you guys thought. As far as I can tell, IBM drives are high quality - but I've also heard they have a high RMA rate. There is nothing physically wrong with the drive as far as I can tell. It works great when the errors aren't occurring. I am in the market for a second drive so I'm wondering what path I should follow. Thanks in advance for any input.

Do you by any chance run Easy CD Creator and were you doing a full install or an uninstall of all or some of the components? There is a known problem that is what you described that happens with Easy CD Creator. I was able to recover but considering how screwed up things seemed I did a clean install anyway.

OK, lets get some of your information straight... the high RMA rate is with IBM's Deskstar 75GXP series harddrives, and it occurs mostly with high-capacity ones... There is a design issue with their 75GXP series HD, but IBM fixed it in the 60GXPs... There is nothing unusual about 60GXP's RMA rate, only 75GXPs...

The problem you described is most likely not a hardware failure, meaning there's nothing physically wrong with the HD itself... Did this problem occur only once? or did it happen even after your did a reformat and reinstall? It sounds like something corrupted your OS files, which makes the HD unbootable...

I've read that the 60 GXP's have a high RMA rate as well, but that may be just a localized issue. As I've mentioned, this error has happened about three times before - unknown why it occurs.

I've never used Easy CD Creator and never will because Nero is infinitely superior.
