I know this isn't technically cases and cooling, but case size and desk size/type are closely related.

I have a tempory table and am searching for something nicer. I prefer tables and would like to see what the pros and cons of each are and get some suggestions based on your experience.

Links and Pics will be appreciated.

I prefer large executive type desks. But you have to have the room to allow for them. If I don't have room for them, then I like dual layered desks, so that the dual 19" LCDs can go on the upper shelf, and still have room for the kb & mouse, and other stuff on the normal desk part...

Pics to follow if necessary.

I use a temporary table too (fold-up legs, if that's what you mean)... I think they call them banquet tables.

This will probably be impossible to describe, but I place the keyboard on my lap. That is, I kick back in a chair, put my feet on the table, and type from a keyboard on my lap. I do this both at my house, and at work -- strange but true! So, that's the first part...

Secondly, almost everything else is on the table, except for my computer and printer, which I place on a TV stand. Why? Because it's the perfect height, e.g. half the height of a table!

So, for the most part, I'll have to vote for tables... :)

Having said that, I would NEVER consider using a hutch, because there's no room for my feet to dangle over. A desk might work, I guess, but I'd be afraid of scratching it.

Desks are limiting for me.
Tables (arranged in L-shape0 are better because they're simple and can have stacked shelves and the like. I liked the layered look.
Practical for my components like a power console, external USBs, scanner, printer, telephone, and lighting.
Tables are a cost effective than desks, and under storage can be great in many ways.

I have an L shaped desk which lets me put my rig on top. Helps keep the dust down and I like looking at it since I built it myself.

I built my own desk, after shopping around and not finding a design that I liked. Of course months later Ikea came out with a desk that is similar to mine. Ahh well.

I use an oak executive desk my dad got about 15 years ago. It looks somewhat worn out but is fairly large and easily strong enough to support my computer and other stuff.

Yeah, those folding tables are good (be sure to get one with a high-quality surface such as Formica or the GE equivalent as that stuff that they put on Bush and O'sullivan stuff (thin vinyl "high pressure" laminate) won't be long for this world and reacts with all kinds of rubber and foam - makes a real mess) but if you want to keyboard with proper ergonomics, you'll have to get a keyboard tray for it that is height adjustable. Apparently Vin doesn't give a flip for proper ergonomics. But I suppose if you're a reclining "hunt and pecker" you don't need no steenking ergonomics... ;)

Right now I'm using an ancient Steelcase desk (WWII military surplus that was army green) and have my kbd resting on a piece of plywood on top of the drawer. Not properly ergonomic either, but closer and I can adjust the distance from my screen just by pulling out or pushing in the drawer (I know what some of you are thinking - STOP IT!) :D

3' x 7' solid core oak door on 2 old file cabnet things, its the perfect height for my chair, is huge, and will stand up to any beating i can give it. i do electronics projects on it, homework, test camp stoves, i have a chunk of sheetmetal i put down if im doing something that can harm the wood. computer sits ontop, on edge next to wall, monitor angled between that and back wall, stuff stacked on case: pda, right speaker, desklamp. otherside has a small dresser on it, otherspeaker is on that. works well.

i have a weird dual level desk

60/40 split where 60% is normal level, 40% is slightly higher (put my stereo reciever there)

the 60% i have the rig and monitor... i dont want to put my rig below in the cupboard because of heat (from my old rig), and hard to get at it when needed (VERY HARD)

my desk also has a hutch where i keep my model cards and all discs

You don't understand the situation, Zipper...

I do a lot of web dev. I just come over to places like this 'on break'.

It's not unusual for me to 'sit' here 20 hours a day. Really...

There isn't a guy in the world that can sit upright for that long!!!

As a matter of fact, that's a good way to kill yourself, literally -- developing blood clots in the deep veins in your legs.

That's why I put my feet up on the desk, and keyboard in my lap... strong survival instinct! ;)

I have a large desk with no drawers, so I've got plenty of space both on top of and below the desk to put stuff. I need it with two monitors on the desk (one of them is a CRT), and my big sub (I have logitech Z-5500 speakers) under the desk on one side and my computer (P180 case) on the other.

Ikea desk for $50 CAD. It's a 80cm x 150cm or something like that. Modular, can buy height adjustable legs or be cheap like me and go for $2.50/leg. A really nice one is the Jerker desk at Ikea, 80cm x 200cm I think, has 1 shelf and some extra you can add on. For stylish and simple, go to Ikea. I personally hate executive desks: too many cabinets, so many features/shelves no one ever uses properly.

I use two very sturdy commercial grade banquet tables, arranged in an L shape. They are 30 inch W by 60 L and 30 inches H, with folding and lockable square steel tubing for legs, not some pressed flat steel. These are the type you could put 200 pounds of food on, and then sit on it as well. They cannot sag; overweight would cause the legs to collapse.

Hint: if you buy more than one banquet table, make sure the second one is from the same manufacturer, There can be variations from the standard height, and then the tables won't match properly.

Gee. I wonder if I should put the make and model in my sig ;)
