Deskjet prints green in place of black now

The printer is a 990Cse, it has been printing black a little light, but reliably today. Then it just started printing light green clearly in its place. After disconnecting power, reseating the printer carts and cleaning the contacts, it printed a few test pages in black. A couple mintues later, it's back to the same shens. It seems like the circuitry is borked.

Are these Genuine carts or aftermarket?
Either way, sounds like a defective cart to me.
(yes, brand new carts can be defective even from HP)
