OK I ruled out any Canon offerings after hearing the horror stories although my personal experience with them has been good...

I do light to moderate printing. I am considering the 840/842c for about $140. Is this a good printer?

I realize the ink cartridges are smaller and thus the cost-per-page is higher than the 930/932 but I don't think I do enough printing to make up for the difference in $50+ initial cost.

BTW no more Epsons for me...I have a color 440 and its so slow, so troublesome...never again

I have sold a ton of HP842c's and they are very nice printers. You can get the locally at any B&M OD or OM for 149.95 +tax.

I personally use the 932c since it is faster and has PhotoRetIII :)

I'd splurge for a 900 series printer if I were you. Trust me, even if you only do light print jobs, larger cartridges will work out to your advantage; especially when you'll pay around $40 for a set of black and color replacement cartridges every time around. Plus, like John mentioned, you get PhotoRET III (well, at least most of the 900 series models have that). It has better color layering, and thus, better image output.

Elemental007, I have an 842c, and while it's an OK printer, if you have access to a Sam's Club, they're selling the 895Cse for $10 more than you'll pay for the 842c. I have an 895Cxi (business version of the Cse) and it blows the doors off the 842c, in the areas of print speed (especially in draft print mode). Both printers use the larger ink supplies, compared to the smaller supplies you'll see in a 600 series printer.

What about the 812?

HP is selling them for $104 after $129-$25 MIR. Seems like a good price...I figured it was a bit older than the 840series but is it still good?

I have had the 812 for about a year and I still haven't changed the ink! and i print alot of stuff. It is a nice printer for the cost.

Good Luck

I don't think the 812 is necessarily older. I have an 855 that's five years old. HP doesn't really go in an increasing order in printer numbering, ya see. While a higher number usually denotes a faster/higher quality printer, it doesn't necessarily denote a newer printer.

The 812 is the predecessor to the 842. There really isn't much difference, except that the 842 is a little bit faster.

The 812/842 use lower-capacity inks and if you do alot of printing, they can be expensive to feed. The 900 series uses larger-capacity cartridges which gives you a lower cost/page.
