Im both excited and enormously pissed off.

The good news, htc has delivered an ICS update for the Desire S. which is great.

The bad news, its not an OTA update.

Normally that would not be a problem, but to update I need HTC sync, and HTC sync is only available on windows... I use a mac, so does my wife, my work computer, my MacBook pro.

So I downloaded a trial version of parallels and installed a free version of windows 8, I couldn't get 7. And the drivers for the desire s are not available for windows 8.

Ahhhhhh! How I'm pissed, I have a friend who gladly is willing to let me hi-jack his computer.

All this work for a bloody upgrade.

You should install a custom recovery, then you can install updates through the phone without the need for HTC Sync. That MIGHT require a PC, but I don't think it will, and once that's done you're set.

Hmmmm, while i'm not yet sure what a custom recovery is, i am soon going to look this up as a viable solution.

although, I might not do it, in 6 months time my contract is up and i will get a new phone, for another 2 years :'(

but still, thanks for the tip, I will look into custom recovery's and how to do them for future use.

I would suggest checking out xda-developers.com for information. Be advised, though, custom recoveries are not for everyone. They do require a fair amount of reading and preparation. Totally worth it if you can get through it all though.

Anyway, best of luck to you!
