Desirable CPUs drying up?

I toyed with the idea of replacing a CPU of mine that doesn't seem to work entirely 100%.
So I checked at my fav outlet, to see what it would cost me now, for that classic socket 478 2.8GHz P4C.
- They didn't have any! In fact they didn't have any P4C at all! Just Prescotts. So I checked with my second source. They didn't have any either! Prescotts only, over the entire range.
A peek at newegg.com reassured me that it is still available. - But hey what is this?

I talked with one PC-manufacturer about a week ago. Funny enough, this builder decided to go 100% Intel slightly more than a year ago. Dell style. I basically wanted to know what temperatures they are getting with Prescotts. He was pretty tightlipped, but I did get that they were utterly disgusted with both the Prescott and the CeleronD (apparently, CeleronDs are just as hot as Prescotts). Through gritted teeth and a desperate glint in the eyes, I also sort of got the impression that they are trying to get away with delivering systems, they really aren't happy with. So why? Seemed as if they didn't get as many Northwoods as they wanted/needed. Could that be?

So have Intel reduced availability of P4C?
Or is the Prescott such a big seller that there's no point in stocking Northwoods?
Or is the market vacuumed for Northwoods?

northwoods only makeup like 20% of what Intel produces these days.

prescott is 10-14*C hotter then northwood.
prescott is slower then a northwood (clock for clock)

id go AMD before going prescott ~ but there are still plenty of good northwoods to be found.

u should have asked me i just sold a p4 2.4c northwood chip for 65 bucks. look in the ft/fs forum and i bet u can find some.

the P4C has no more juice left in it so that's why intel is keeping the prescott. at 3.5ghz and up, the prescott begins to perform how it was meant to perform, and it should be able to go up to 4ghz or so. still, the athlon 64's are faster.

I noticed this also. The P4 3.4C that I have actually went up in price a few months after I bought mine, and even now they are only about $40 less than they were 6 months ago. It seems that for speeds around 3.0 - 3.4, the Northwoods are pretty desirable. Anything above, 3.4, I would go with a Prescott if you just had to go Intel. That being said, if you're doing a cpu/mobo replacemnt, go with an A64 setup.

thats what they want you to think, it only does it ever so slightly.

Intel moved out of the northwood production as the prescott is cheaper to make now, more chips per die.

So if sticking with intel you might want to get a Northwood now as the demand will only go up as supply runs out as it is now.

Of course I have plenty of room in my AMD Athlon64 system. 🙂

OMG, that's a rockin' deal!!! I only go to the FS/FT forum on occasion. Tough to find stuff with all the "bump" "TTT" "up up up" replies, lol.
