Designing an item for work

I'm currently working as an Engineering intern for Eaton doing various peon jobs like time studies, updating floor designs, pulling drawings ect... Anyway,

As a result of time studies I noticed it takes a long time for people on the line to measure wires. These have to be accurate but they are always changing so I was trying to come up with a way to measure the line as it is pulled from the spool instead of having to pull from the spool and then measure using tape. I haven't found any items that I could use that are already made so I've been working on a design that involves a small surveyor's wheel (1 inch wheels) and some other type of wheel below it (Thinking maybe a clothes line wheel) so that the wire can run between the two. They would be connected via a bracket and springs so to keep the wire tight against the surveyor's wheel. There are only two gauges (12 and 10) so I don't think I'll encounter much of a problem there.

Anyone have any advice in making this smaller or know of something already made? It needs to be something that isn't wasted motion, i.e. since they are already pulling off the spool pulling through this isn't another motion.

Thanks,

lol well the engineer over me who has been working for over 30 years didn't know of anything that would work. I was sure they made some but I couldn't find any where I live nor online. Thanks for the link.

Glad I posted before going to the trouble

For bulk cat 5e network cable, there are numbers used to count the feet printed on the cable. See if the bulk cable has numbers marking the feet on the cable. If it does, then just record the starting number and ending number to get the amount used.

Now you know that once engineers get into cushy jobs they realize that there really is no need to actually think critically. Just do the minimum and collect the checks.

If you want to think critically, start a business.
