I'm guessing that you are using an Nvidia graphics card, and haven't updated your drivers recently.
I had the exact same problem - gf4 ti 4400. I downloaded the latest drivers, and the problem went away.
funny, I've heard stories of downloading the latest drivers CAUSING this. State your driver version, try new ones, but chances are trying old ones might be what helps. I'm using the 44.03's just fine.
go to nvidia.com hard, but before that, hit driver heaven for the driver cleaner utility, unless you don't want to be a hardass like me, just get teh 53.03's and install them over, making for a messy installation of software, you idiot :disgust:
