I've seen these files popping up in several folders. they seem harmless but I'd like to know where the hell they're coming from. apparently, there are many programs that can use them but they just all of a sudden started popping up out of nowhere. what could this mean? am I being hacked right under my nose?

You didn't mention what OS, but are you using 9x/ME
and playing older DOS (specifically 4DOS) based games
or running a old version of Word Perfect?

Then those are normal files created that sometimes don't
delete themselves when the program is terminated.
